Perry Reaches Finals in Two Consecutive Events [4/4/2004] 8-Ball is the most popular played discipline of pool, but yet the majority of tournaments are 9-Ball events. The Killer B’s Series promoted its first 8-Ball tournament with Fast Break Billiards in Plainville, MA with great success. The event drew 44 players to prove that their abilities went beyond the rotational game of 9-Ball.
Several top Killer B players lost early round matches. Mike Keith lost his first round match against Rick Gatta, who just came off a 3rd place finish at the last Killer B event. Tony Masi barley came out of the gate in his first match against Jason Michas losing 5-1. Pete Campbell and Rob Berkeley both lost their first matches and had to match up early on the one-loss side and Campbell came out on top, 5-1.
Alex Morin and Ken Ludy, ranked number one and two respectively, were both knocked out of the event before reaching the cash line. This left the door wide open for 3rd ranked Ed Fortin and 4th ranked Tim Perry to gain some valuable Player of the Year points.
Fortin met Perry on the winner’s side quarterfinals and Tim dominated the match by winning 5-1. Fortin went on to met Shayne Cote, who took another early loss to Jason Michas and grinded through the one-loss side. He continued his strong play and left Fortin in 4th place.
Perry faced off against Jason Michas for the hot seat. Jason gave Tim his toughest match of the day, but Tim prevailed 5-3 to reach the hot seat undefeated for the second consecutive event.
This forced an early tournament rematch between Jason and Shayne. It’s tough to defeat the same player twice in an event, but Jason was ready for the challenge and reached the hill first. Shayne reached the hill and the last game became a game of strategy. It looked like Shayne had the best of it, but dogged the position on his last ball and missed it. Jason went for a win or lose bank on his last ball and made it to win another rematch against Perry in the finals.
Tim started the set off with a break and run for a 1-0 lead. From that rack on, no one would have a break and run rack due to clusters. The set became a test of patients and strategy. The match went back and forth with Tim taking the biggest lead at 3-1, but Jason came back to tie it up.
Tim reached the hill first and the next rack produced a 1-9 cluster. A safety war evolved since no one was in position for a break out shot. Jason was partially hooked by Tim’s ball. He jumped the ball made his ball in the side pocket and drove the cue ball two-rails to break out the 1-9 cluster. He went on to win the game and tie up the score once more at hill-hill.
After a couple of innings in the next game, Jason had the first good chance to run out, but he missed his last ball. Tim had a wide-open table and ran out to win the match and his first Killer B event in six years.
Tim and Ed Fortin have taken full advantage of Player of the Year opportunity. Tim is in a two-way tie for the second place with Ken Ludy and Ed is only 10 points off pace. Alex Morin’s points lead has been cut down to 80 points with three players hot on his trail.
The Killer B’s Series extends a special thanks to Webb Custom Cues, www.TotalPool.info, InsidePool magazine, and Boston Billiard Club for their valued support.
