Ludy Takes Down Another Boston Billiard Club Event [3/21/2004] Boston Billiard Club of Warwick, RI hosted the 8th Killer B’s Series. 49 players showed up to play for the $1,800 prize fund and to compete with the top Killer B players in New England.
Ken Ludy seems to own events held at Boston Billiard Clubs. A month earlier, he went undefeated at Boston Billiard Club in Worcester, MA to win his first event of the year. He seemed to be on his way of repeating this feat at this Boston Billiard Club venue with wins over Mike Keith and Greg Cutillo, but he fell to up-and-comer Rick Gatta in the winner’s side quarterfinals.
Gatta has been a dedicated player on the Killer B’s Series for the past two years. He practices diligently and constantly seeks knowledge through watching everyone play. He can be found at Fast Break every Saturday playing in their weekly event and taking ad-hoc lessons from veteran player, Jerry Lake. This all paid off at this event when he cashed for his first time in a Killer B event. Not only did he cash, but he went deep into the cash by placing 3rd in the tournament.
Shayne Cote took an early hill-hill lose against John Morlock in the second round. He then went on to win 7 straight matches. He met up with Ludy and was relegated to 4th place.
Ludy gained a rematch against Gatta, but the turn out was very different from their first meeting on the winner’s side. Ken dominated the match and won his second trip to the finals in this series.
Ludy’s opponent would be former Killer B’s Player of the Year, Tim Perry. Tim has spent the year hovering in the cash at almost every event this year. He’s had two 3rd place and two 5th place finishes this year. This was Tim’s first trip into the finals in over a year.
Ludy got off to a quick start and jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Then Ken hooked himself behind the 9-ball and gave Tim ball-in-hand for the win. Next, Ken ran a rack down to the 9-ball and missed it. Those two mistakes allowed Tim to get within 2 games,5-3. Tim scratched on his next break and Ken ran the rack to reach the hill. He returned the favor and scratched on the break and gave Tim a 1-9 combination. Unfortunately for Tim, he came up empty on his break and Ken ran out to force another set.
Tim took his turn to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead over Ken in the final set. After a 4-9 carom and a nine on the break, Ken cut Tim’s lead in half and continued to win the next game to bring the score to 4-3 with Tim leading. Tim took advantage of a Ludy miss in the next game then broke in nine ball to reach the hill, 6-3. When the score was at 6-4, Tim ran out a rack, only to scratch while making the nine. The set completely shifted to Ken’s advantage as he went on to win the next two games and the tournament.
The Killer B’s Series extends a special thanks to Webb Custom Cues, www.TotalPool.info, InsidePool magazine, and Boston Billiard Club for their valued support.
